I got an itch for some retro leather riding gloves, but couldn’t really find what I was looking for. I wanted something made out of heavy duty leather with a short cuff (I ride in 110F+ weather on a weekly basis), an interesting color (no blacks or dark browns), and a clean look (no straps or elastic). I decided to fashion my own gloves. I have absolutely no experience with leatherwork or even general sewing. I’ve refinished wood on old rifles before, so I figured refinishing leather would be similar. I picked up a $10 pair of those yellow cowhide work gloves, a bottle of leather stain, a bottle of mink oil, some fabric glue, and a Speedy Stitcher. I wore the gloves in a bit and fitted them to my hand, stained and oiled them, then got to cutting and sewing. They turned out much better than I expected.
They’ve darkened up a bit since I took this photo, and are less red looking now which I’m pleased with. I’m going to experiment with a few more pairs, and maybe make a few different cuff designs. I think I’m going to do a little styling on the leather with a soldering iron as well. Here they are on my hand. I have thin wrists, but largish knuckles, and the cuff is just barely large enough to fit over them. I’ll probably add a loop to help with getting them on. They’re nice and snug, and definitely won’t fly off in a wreck.
I had some fellow riders express interest in buying a pair. I’m going to experiment with a few more before I decide if I’m going to make more.

These are really cool, might be interested in a set or two myself, one idea would be to add some perforation on the fingers for those hot rides.

Thanks! Yeah, I’m going to experiment with stuff like that on a few more pairs. I’m going to ride these around in 114F weather today and see how sweaty my hands get.

Shit, mine turned out a lot better than that guy’s. I’ve never heard of Motostuka. I like the stitching on the bottom of theirs, but I don’t like that elastic portion in the middle. Takes away the clean look and kind of makes it look like a gardening glove. For $75 I’d want a them to look a little cleaner with a nicer finish.

Yeah, Although I agree about his stitch I wouldnt use dental floss and I would want it a lot tighter than his. I like the stain you used, and I agree about the elastic.

You’re quite welcome. I taught my self to sew too. I had my favorite pair of jeans, they ripped so I had to teach myself to fix them. Now I guess I need to learn leather working.
